Green Valley, Sahuarita and Tucson are well-educated communities, with more than 80% of the population having earned a high school diploma or higher, compared to the national average of 66 percent. In addition, 23.3. percent of the area?s working population has a bachelor degree or higher and 9 percent has a graduate or professional degree.
In Pima County, there are than 120 elementary schools, 34 junior high schools, 22 high schools, 27 parochial schools, over 100 private schools and more than 20 vocational training schools (private and technical schools). Public school enrollment is approximately 120,000 students. Schools for higher learning include: Arizona State School for the Deaf & Blind, Pima Community College, The University of Arizona and University of Phoenix (Tucson).
The Green Valley and Sahuarita areas are served primarily by two public school districts.
Continental School District
encompasses nearly 40 square miles in the area around the retirement community of Green Valley, Arizona, Continental School District is located about 35 miles south of downtown Tucson. Approximately 300 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth will attend Continental School during the 2001-2002 school year.
Continental School District enjoys an outstanding academic reputation statewide. The District offers a comprehensive instructional program, and Continental School students consistently score above the county, state, and national averages on the Stanford 9 tests of basic skills and the AIMS test of Arizona Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.
The school district provides instruction in grades kindergarten though with grades, with high school students attending Sahuarita Unified School District.
Sahuarita Unified School District with an enrollment of 2,100 students, Sahuarita Unified School District covers 630 square miles, stretching from San Xavier Indian Reservation south to the Santa Cruz County line and into the rural communities of Lakewood, Arivaca and Elephant Head. Using funds from the bond election in 1997, Sahuarita Unified School District built a new high school and renovated the Sahuarita school campus in anticipation of continued area growth. Vocational programs at Sahuarita have won national awards, with the National Automotive Diesel champion coming from Sahuarita High School. Golden Bell Awards for innovative programs have been received from the Arizona School Boards Association by Sahuarita High School and Sahuarita Elementary School.
All Schools, K-12, have computer laboratories and computers in every classroom.
Sahuarita has enjoyed Statewide success in many athletic programs including: boys football, girls softball, as well as tennis and golf teams.
Tucson Unified School District encompasses much of Central Tucson. One of the oldest and largest school districts in the state of Arizona, TUSD educates over 61,000 students with 3,700 teachers, 3,600 support staff and 200 administrators.
